Apple Files Patent for Removing Unwanted Graffiti in the Metaverse

Apple has filed a patent application to make removing unwanted graffiti easier in the metaverse, as it prepares for the release of its mixed reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro. The patent proposes a scenario in which an avatar enters another user’s digital home and spray paints graffiti. To counter this, the victim can virtually erase the graffiti.

This is not the first time Apple has filed a patent to protect virtual reality users from unwanted experiences in the metaverse. In 2021, the company filed a patent to protect users from intruders and digital bullies.

The newly filed patent would allow users to make intruders disappear from their virtual space. When certain social interaction criteria are breached, the avatars and/or content associated with the offending behavior can become partially or fully invisible.

Ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for users in virtual worlds is crucial, particularly given the prevalent issues of harassment and bullying, which are especially common among children. Even adults can subject fellow avatars to uncomfortable situations, and if users struggle to differentiate virtual harassment from real harassment, it can negatively impact their engagement in virtual experiences.

By implementing features to remove unwanted graffiti and intruders, Apple aims to provide a sense of protection and security for users in the metaverse, enabling them to fully immerse themselves in the digital realm without fear of unwanted disruptions.

As Apple continues to innovate in the augmented and virtual reality space, patents like these serve as important safeguards for users, ensuring a more inclusive and enjoyable metaverse experience.
