Epic Games to Develop New Metaverse Combining Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox

Video game developer Epic Games is aiming to merge Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox into an interoperable metaverse. The company plans to use the Unreal 6 gaming engine as the foundation for future metaverse development in gaming.

In a recent interview with The Verge, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney discussed the Unreal 6 engine as the central point for creating a game-agnostic digital assets marketplace. The Unreal engine is widely used in the gaming industry by companies developing major titles like Epic’s Fortnite, Mass Effect, and other AAA franchises.

“The whole idea is that players are moving towards games where they can play with their friends,” said Sweeney in the interview. He emphasized that players are willing to spend more on digital items in games they intend to play long-term. Games like Grand Theft Auto Online have already proven that in-game purchases can generate significant revenue for companies through digital assets.

However, Sweeney also noted in the interview that the gaming ecosystem needs to evolve into a true metaverse for gamers. He highlighted the importance of interoperable economies to build player trust in owning digital goods over the long term.

In 2022, Epic Games announced a $2 billion funding to support their vision of creating a metaverse. The company also participated in Serie A’s funding for metaverse infrastructure developer Hadean, raising a total of $30 million.

Epic Games’ executive vice president Saxs Persson shared in The Verge interview that the company envisions a future of gaming where interoperability allows gamers to stay engaged across various platforms. Persson expressed excitement about the possibility of seamless integration between Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite, providing a unified gaming experience and allowing the best ecosystem to thrive.
