Trump Nominates Teresa Goody Guillén as SEC Chair
Soon-to-be President Donald Trump is considering Teresa Goody Guillén, a seasoned Securities attorney with expertise in traditional finance and blockchain regulation, for the role of heading the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
If selected, her appointment may signal a notable change in the agency’s regulatory approach compared to the current ‘anti-crypto’ stance under Gary Gensler.
The Trump administration has indicated a shift away from what they described as “regulation by enforcement” in the cryptocurrency sector. During his campaign, Trump vowed to remove Gensler on his first day in office, and reports suggest Gensler is preparing to step down before Trump’s second inauguration on Jan 20.
Trump’s team is seeking a candidate well-versed in digital assets who can potentially ease the SEC’s strict regulations on crypto until Congress provides clearer legislative guidance. Goody Guillén is viewed as an ideal match for this strategy by blockchain and finance leaders. Advocates emphasize her deep understanding of security law and thoughtful regulatory approach. Her experience with the SEC and support for blockchain companies have garnered significant backing from both crypto and traditional finance figures.
Goody Guillén serves as a partner at BakerHostetler, where she co-leads the firm’s blockchain division. According to her LinkedIn, she previously worked as the SEC’s general counsel from 2009 to 2011 and later advised on enforcement matters alongside former SEC Chair Harvey Pitt.
Her background in SEC operations and opposition to enforcement actions make her a strong contender for the position, especially as Trump’s administration seeks a crypto-friendly regulator for the SEC. Brendan Playford, co-founder of data provider Masa, described her as a potential catalyst for change who could reshape the finance industry.
Goody Guillén is part of a competitive pool of candidates for the SEC Chair role, which includes individuals like Robert Stebbins from Willkie Farr & Gallagher, Brad Bondi from Paul Hastings, former SEC commissioner Paul Atkins, and Brian Brooks, the former Acting Controller of the Currency.
The Trump transition team is moving swiftly and plans to announce the new SEC chair before Thanksgiving, according to reports from CoinDesk. This sense of urgency underscores the administration’s focus on rapidly evolving financial regulations. If appointed, Goody Guillén’s leadership could bring significant changes to how the SEC addresses crypto regulations. With the administration already making bold Cabinet picks, many are watching closely as this could shape regulatory reforms in the coming years.
