2 Men Charged for Planning to Steal Bitcoin

The U.S. Branch of Justice (DOJ) reported Friday the unlocking of a prosecution charging Dominic Pineda and Shon Morgan with a “plan to commit home invasion robbery for tens of millions of dollars in bitcoin.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) captured the two on Thursday in Virginia.

U.S. Lawyer Damian Williams detailed:

The litigants partook in a rough intend to break into a family’s home around midnight and power its occupants to give the code to what the respondents accepted was a huge number of dollars in bitcoin currency.

According to the court report, the litigants took part in the arrangement from May 18 to May 24, 2020, “to break into a home in Irvington, New York and rob its residents of cash and cryptocurrency.”

Around the hour of the arranged home intrusion, bitcoin was exchanging at about $10,000 per coin. BTC topped at an unsurpassed exorbitant cost of $68,892 in November 2021. It has since dropped in esteem and is as of now exchanging at $20,892.

The Justice Department described:

Pineda, 21, of Manassas, Virginia, and Morgan, 21, of Centreville, Virginia, are each accused of scheme to commit Hobbs Act theft, disregarding 18 U.S.C. § 1951, which conveys a greatest term of 20 years in prison.

The Hobbs Act characterizes burglary as unlawfully taking someone else’s property “by means of actual or threatened force.”
