The Nature of the Assertion
There’s a circulating post on X (previously known as Twitter) that includes an image claiming to be a BBC News story regarding Anant Ambani, who sits on the Jio Platforms Limited board and is the offspring of the esteemed Mukesh Ambani, the head of Reliance Industries. The post alleges he’s at the epicenter of a rumor stirring India.
The text on the post’s thumbnail suggests, “India was taken aback by the events of yesterday. Anant Ambani bids farewell to a simple life.”
The post links to an article that seems to originate from the BBC News site, authored by “Jane Wakefield, business reporter.” The title reads, “CNBC-TV18 leadership declines to comment on the controversy surrounding the ‘Vantara (Star of the Forest)’ interview” and showcases a picture of Ambani with Radhika Merchant.
According to the report, Ambani discusses a digital investment platform that asserts individuals can generate greater income with an initial commitment of Rs 26,000. An archived snapshot of this viral post, now removed, can be accessed here.
However, our fact-checking process ascertained that the linked article originated from a website pretending to be BBC News. The alleged interview does not exist, and Ambani hasn’t promoted any such investment service.
Evidence on Record
It was identified that the URL in the X post doesn’t match the official BBC web address (“https://www.bbc.com/”), but instead shows “thelaserway.com.”
Furthermore, unlike the genuine BBC site, where clickable elements are expectedly functional, leading to home and section pages, the fake site’s BBC logo, top panel, and subtopics are inactive. All operational links on the page redirect to a questionable crypto-trading site called “Everix Edge,” promoting a signup page.
Searching with the proper keywords, we could not locate any BBC News articles written by Jane Wakefield. Instead, we identified an authentic report credited to Wakefield, titled “How fraudsters are getting fake articles onto Facebook.”
This detailed report tackles the spread of bogus articles using Wakefield’s identity, imitating the BBC, which frequently include famous people while endorsing sham online investment services.
In addition, there are no media reports or credible sources to suggest Ambani has endorsed any investment platform.
This investigation confirms that the piece concerning Ambani is fictitious. Seemingly, the webpage is a scheme aiming to entice individuals into financial ventures by misusing the reputation of established sites and well-known personalities.

The main image from the fake write-up is seen on various platforms showcasing Ambani and Merchant. Other images within the article are captures at 1:59 and 0:26 time markers from an original interview Ambani had with News18’s Anand Narasimhan that was published on February 26, 2024.
This interview converses about the animal rescue operations at Vantara, Jamnanagar Zoo (archived here and here). It has been featured across various news YouTube channels, including CNBC TV18 and Money Control, with no mentions of online investment or trading services.
