Chief Technology Officer States 2025 Will Be ‘Key Year’ for Their Metaverse Investments

Meta’s chief technology officer believes that 2025 could be a pivotal year for the company’s metaverse endeavors, according to a report from Business Insider.
In an internal memo from November, Andrew “Boz” Bosworth expressed that this year is crucial in demonstrating whether the metaverse is a groundbreaking achievement or a risky venture. He shared a post titled “2025: The Year of Greatness” on Meta’s internal forum Workplace, mentioning plans from the Reality Labs division to introduce several AI-powered wearable devices, without specifying a timeline or details.
Bosworth emphasized the need to drive sales, retention, and engagement, particularly in mixed reality. He stressed the importance of Horizon Worlds on mobile breaking out for Meta’s long-term plans to succeed. He warned that the outcome of 2025 could determine the perception of the metaverse project as visionary or misadventure.
Bosworth referenced Steven Levy’s book “Insanely Great,” highlighting how small teams can achieve remarkable results. He announced changes within Meta’s Reality Labs division, with COO Dan Reed’s former unit now under the leadership of Meta’s COO, Javier Olivan.
Following a record revenue of $1.08 billion in the fourth quarter, the Reality Labs unit also reported its largest quarterly operating loss of $4.97 billion, totaling approximately $60 billion in losses since 2020. Meta has not yet responded to inquiries outside normal working hours.
In an all-hands meeting, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg discussed the company’s smart glasses last week, emphasizing ongoing developments in the augmented and virtual reality products.
