Itu Makes Commitments Around Ai, Meta...

ITU members have agreed on a set of priorities to ensure that advanced technologies like AI and the metaverse contribute to a sustainable digital future. It has been stated that these commitments will be the focus over the next four years.

The priorities were agreed upon during the World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly (WTSA) in India. The event reinforced the ITU’s objective to meet the fast-evolving global needs.

The ITU has settled on eight wide-ranging areas, including prioritizing the safe and responsible use of AI, interoperable and inclusive metaverse applications, technical requirements for digital public infrastructure, deployments of communication technologies in automated driving and other digital industries, and encouraging sustainable digital transformation across multiple industries and technologies.

It will also focus on preparing new generations of talent to support its standardization work and explore the application of caller-location information in emergencies.

The ITU has also committed to meeting new policy objectives and market demand among its resolutions.

Prior to the agreement, the UN organization established multiple study groups dedicated to exploring specific themes like security, future network technologies, IoT, and economic and policy issues. The new resolutions emphasize supporting developing countries.

The ITU also highlighted India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on universal connectivity, ethical AI, consensus decisions, and meaningful digital inclusion during the conference.

“ITU standards and capacity development must create the foundation for the digital future we want,” said Seizo Onoe, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Standardisation Bureau. “The decisions of WTSA highlight the commitment of ITU membership to these goals,” Onoe added.
