Meta executive warns that the metaverse risks becoming a ‘legendary misadventure’ if Reality Labs doesn’t change course by 2025
Meta’s chief technology officer Andrew “Boz” Bosworth expressed in an internal memo obtained by Business Insider that the company’s Reality Labs division must significantly improve in 2025, or risk being remembered as a “legendary misadventure” in their venture into mixed and virtual reality.
Despite investing billions into VR development, Reality Labs has not achieved the anticipated breakthrough success. As highlighted in August 2024, Meta’s losses continue to escalate uncontrollably, as reported by PC Gamer. The division experienced nearly $50 billion in losses from 2020 to 2024, with no signs of improvement. In the recent fourth-quarter earnings report, Meta disclosed another operating loss of $5 billion.
