Meta has posted new job openings for its metaverse unit at its California headquarters following recent layoffs at its Reality Labs division. The company is seeking professionals skilled in generative AI (GenAI), indicating potential integration of this technology into its metaverse projects. Under the leadership of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Meta has been investing in metaverse-related technology development since rebranding from Facebook in 2021.

Meta Explores AI Integration in Metaverse Gaming

A new job listing from Meta hints at combining generative AI with virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) in gaming content. The role within Meta’s Metaverse Content team will involve creating a GenAI strategy for games, starting with Reality Labs and focusing on Horizon, to innovate in AR, VR, and MR content.

Meta’s Horizon OS powers the Quest headsets, serving as the gateway to Meta’s gaming ecosystem that includes experiences like Horizon Worlds.

The selected candidate will work on Meta’s GenAI strategy, collaborate with creators, conduct consumer research for new gameplay experiences, and manage R&D funds for experimental initiatives.

Meta Enhances Metaverse Team Efficiency

Meta recently split the Reality Labs team into two divisions – one focusing on metaverse projects and the other on advanced technologies such as AR and VR. Established in 2022 by Zuckerberg, Reality Labs has been at the core of Meta’s metaverse exploration.

The restructuring reportedly led to layoffs at Reality Labs as Meta shifted its focus to the metaverse unit under Vishal Shah. This division will oversee development for Quest VR, Horizon OS, and Horizon Worlds.

Despite its revenue growth, Reality Labs has sustained losses, with substantial figures in 2022 and 2023, indicating ongoing challenges despite revenue gains.
