The IMI is worried about the interoperability of Indian music in the metaverse.
Metaverse interoperability is a mouthful, but also potentially a headache for the music industry. At least, that’s the view of Indian music-industry body IMI, in a submission to the country’s telecoms regulator taking aim at Meta’s long-term strategy.
Which is? That the metaverse – the patchwork of online virtual worlds and games created by different companies – should be interconnectable “mirroring the kind of open internet protocols we see in place today”.
Why is this a problem for music?
“In an interoperable environment, different platforms may have varying levels of copyright enforcement measures and policies. This lack of standardized practices can lead to inconsistencies in addressing online music piracy, creating loopholes that pirates can exploit in order to evade liability,” claimed IMI, according to the Hindu Business Line.
However, IMI is also arguing that interoperability could be an issue for music licensing deals, if people can easily take any music and/or musical items between worlds.
