The Intersection of Video Games and the Metaverse: An Intertwined Connection

Video Games And The Metaverse: A Strong Infusion

The concept of the metaverse has been around since the 1990s, but it only gained popularity among the general public in the last year. It is a virtual world where users can interact with others, explore environments, participate in activities, buy and sell virtual goods, and more.

This concept is closely related to video games, especially massively multiplayer online games (MMORPGs) that have been around for 30 years. Metaverses and video games share common elements and are intertwined in many ways.

In 2022, Facebook entered the metaverse with Horizon Worlds, a virtual world where users with VR headsets can meet, socialize, discover new things, attend concerts, and more. For some, like Mark Zuckerberg, the metaverse represents the future of the internet. In essence, the metaverse is a virtual world where users can interact with each other and the environment using virtual or augmented reality, offering a more immersive and interactive experience compared to the current internet.

The emergence of MMORPGs in the late 1990s paved the way for virtual interactions and social engagement in online games. Games like Doom, The Sims, Roblox, Minecraft, GTA V, and Fortnite are examples of how online video games have shaped the metaverse concept. Online video games are considered the primary representation of the metaverse worldwide.

The commonalities between metaverse and video games include the virtual environment, interactions, avatar customization, progression, and goals. Both offer users a way to engage and interact in a digital space, either with friends or strangers.

There are distinctions between video games and the metaverse. Video games focus on specific objectives guided by rules or scenarios, emphasizing entertainment and gameplay elements like competition and problem-solving.

The video game industry is now exploring the potential of the metaverse in game development and platform creation. Platforms like Roblox, Decentraland, Sandbox, and Otherside are incorporating metaverse elements into their gaming experiences, attracting major brands and generating revenue.

As technology advances, the metaverse’s evolution continues, offering more immersive experiences. Video games have a head start in innovation, but challenges remain in ensuring privacy protection and data security in this virtual world.
