Turn off Workplace app and prioritize AI and metaverse in Meta
(Reuters) – Meta Platforms has announced that it will be discontinuing its work-focused Workplace app in order to shift its focus towards building artificial intelligence and metaverse technologies, according to the Facebook parent company on Tuesday.
Workplace will be closed for customers starting in June 2026, but Meta will continue to utilize it as its internal messaging board until August 2025, the company stated.
“We are discontinuing Workplace to concentrate on developing AI and metaverse technologies that we believe will revolutionize the way we work. In the next two years, we will offer Workplace customers the option to transition to Zoom’s Workvivo product, which is Meta’s preferred migration partner,” explained a Meta spokesperson.
The enterprise communications app, Workplace, was initially launched for businesses in 2016, introducing new features such as multi-company groups and shared spaces that enabled employees from different organizations to collaborate.
This decision coincides with Meta’s significant investments in AI products and the metaverse, a shared virtual environment that the company believes will be the future of the internet, potentially leading to concerns of escalating costs impacting growth.
Billing and payment arrangements for Workplace customers will remain unchanged until August of this year, Meta confirmed.
Currently, Workplace offers a core monthly plan priced at $4 per user, with the option to enhance it with add-ons starting at $2 per user per month. The monthly bill is calculated based on the number of billable users unless an organization has a fixed plan in place.
