Decaying stairs and digital art: The intersection of NFTs in San Diego – San Diego Union-Tribune

Crumbling stairway; NFTs and art – San Diego Union-Tribune

Is stairway project another boondoggle?

Regarding “La Jollans want answers on crumbling Camino de la Costa stairs” (April 10, La Jolla Light):

The Camino de la Costa stairs are quite dangerous. Against my better judgment I have used them several times recently. If the city of San Diego has a total of $2,325,000 for this work, I would expect it is sufficient for the plans and construction of new stairs.

The Light stated that $325,000 is just for a feasibility study. That is a pretty expensive study. That should be enough for all design and construction documents (I am in the large-scale development business and know costs). The remaining $2 million should cover the construction. This is not a long run of stairs.

I fear this will be another enormously expensive boondoggle, with earmarked funds squandered elsewhere. Sorry, city, but we see this so often it is hard not to be jaded. Please prove me wrong.

Artists beware: NFTs are not A-OK

Let’s talk about NFTs. [An NFT is a non-fungible token, a unique digital asset that represents ownership of a digital or physical item, such as an image, art or music. NFTs are recorded on a digital ledger called a blockchain and can be sold and traded.]

As a La Jolla artist, many people write to me every day through my website, asking to buy my paintings and pay me with NFTs. I did some research and also contacted my website manager, who advised me not to fall into that trap. One artist warned that he got scammed by them.

So I politely tell people that I don’t sell my art as NFTs. I don’t believe in cyber currencies. There is nothing better than real money to be paid with. Some go away silently, while others persist and want to teach me how to do it and ask several questions as to why I don’t want to do it.

Yet others insult me. I did not reply. I think by not replying I don’t give them the satisfaction of getting to me.

These so-called buyers of art want to make money by reselling their NFTs, and the artist ends up losing.
