Fc Barcelona Exhibits Its First Two Nfts At Moco Museum With The Exhibition 'Masterpiece. A Digital Tribute To Johan Cruyff And Alexia Putellas'

FC Barcelona is showcasing its first two NFTs, In a Way, Immortal (featuring Johan Cruyff) and Empowerment (dedicated to Alexia Putellas), at the Moco Museum. These NFTs are part of the ‘Masterpiece’ collection, which consists of ten artworks that are being presented one by one. These audiovisual works pay homage to iconic moments and figures from Barça that contribute to its rich legacy and historical heritage. The prestigious museum will display these artworks in two rooms dedicated to digital art. The exhibition will be open for visitors in Barcelona starting tomorrow, Thursday 25 April, until 25 June, and will soon move to Amsterdam.

The exhibition, titled ‘Masterpiece. A digital tribute to Johan Cruyff and Alexia Putellas’, opens for visitors at the Moco Museum in Barcelona (C/ Montcada, 25) tomorrow, which coincides with Johan Cruyff’s birthday. The exhibit launch event took place today at the museum and was attended by FC Barcelona’s Vice-President of the Institutional Area, Elena Fort, as well as other executives, representatives of FC Barcelona, former Barça player Jesús Angoy, Lionel Logchies and Kim Logchies (co-founders of the Moco Museum), Birthe Faessen (Chief Exhibition and Collection Officer of the Moco Museum), and the artists and creators of the NFTs, Eric Sas and Alan Company. Also in attendance were Danny Cruyff (widow of Johan Cruyff) and representatives from World of Women and Rhiana Madeline, the creator of Empowerment.

Moco Museum is an independent museum that features a diverse collection of modern, contemporary, and digital art in Barcelona and Amsterdam, with plans to open in London this summer. The museum’s collection includes works by renowned artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Kaws, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, and now FC Barcelona. The digital exhibition of two blaugrana artworks underscores the Club’s strategic commitment to embracing technology and innovation, while also creating memorable cultural experiences for its audience.

‘The Flying Dutchman’ Immortalized as an NFT

FC Barcelona’s first NFT immortalizes Johan Cruyff’s legendary moment in the stadium when he scored a crucial goal against Atlético de Madrid goalkeeper Miguel Reina on 22 December 1973. The NFT, titled In a Way, Immortal, was acquired for $693,000 at a live auction held at Sotheby’s in New York. The artwork will be displayed on a large screen in the main digital art room at the Moco Museum beginning tomorrow, alongside one of Cruyff’s inspiring quotes: “It’s better to go down with your own vision than with someone else’s”.

The animation in the display recalls the iconic moment using molten gold and was created by a team of 40 talented computer graphics and visual effects artists from Hollywood. The 40-second film is accompanied by an original soundtrack performed by a 30-piece orchestra and incorporates real sounds from Spotify Camp Nou and FC Barcelona fans.

Empowering Women in Sports

The second NFT masterpiece, Empowerment, celebrates Alexia Putellas’ exceptional performance in a Champions League semi-final match against Wolfsburg, where she scored two goals. The NFT was acquired for $300,231.36 at a digital auction on OpenSea. The exhibition features a digital sculpture of Putellas in the second room of the museum, highlighting the Club’s commitment to empowering women in sports.

The ‘Barça Lilac’ color, symbolizing equality, covers the walls of the room showcasing Putellas’ digital sculpture, enriched with digital painting, special effects, and authentic chants from Barcelona supporters. Screens in the exhibit display images honoring the player’s character and the Club’s dedication to women’s football, along with a quote from Alexia Putellas: ‘Football has no gender’.
