Social media platform X drops support for NFT profile pictures

Social media platform X drops support for NFT profile pictures

While non-fungible tokens (NFTs) were all the rage a while back, with major tech companies like Facebook’s Meta and X (then Twitter) jumping on the bandwagon with experiments on the blockchain-based technology, it appears that some of them are now pulling back.

X has quietly removed the ability for Premium subscribers to set an NFT they own as a display picture.

Previously, subscribers would be able to select an NFT minted on the Ethereum blockchain as their display image, which would then be denoted by a hexagon shaped border as opposed to the standard circular one.

While those who had previously set an NFT as their user avatar currently still have hexagon-shaped borders, Premium users no longer have the ability to do so on their profile.

All mentions of the feature has also been expunged from the social media platform’s support page.

This comes after X announced in a blogpost that it has become a “video-first” platform, having seen a 30% rise in video view counts between 2022 and 2023, and shared plans to expand the use of artificial intelligence introduce peer-to-peer payments sometime this year.

X originally launched the feature back in January 2022, prior to the company’s acquisition by Elon Musk.

Meta on the other hand removed NFT-related features from its Facebook and Instagram social media platforms back in March of last year.
