Sony further expands into NFT and cryptocurrency realm with the launch of Soneium blockchain
Sony has officially launched the mainnet of Soneium, its Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, as stated on January 14 and shared with CryptoSlate.
Soneium makes use of the OP Stack infrastructure developed by the Optimism Foundation to provide streamlined blockchain experiences. The ecosystem includes Sony’s NFT-focused fan engagement platform by SNFT Inc. and the Soneium Spark incubator to support emerging projects.
During the testnet phase, Soneium Minato hosted over 32 projects selected from 1,700 entries for the Spark incubation program. The network now has over 14 million accounts and 47 million transactions, with apps covering entertainment, gaming, social platforms, and finance.
Sony envisions Soneium as a foundational layer for a decentralized internet, bridging Web2 and Web3 technologies. The goal is to empower creators and foster innovation while safeguarding intellectual property.
Director of Sony Block Solutions Labs, Sota Watanabe, stated: “Our vision with Soneium is to build an open internet where creativity flows freely, empowering the next wave of users in web3.”
Sony’s new projects
In addition to the mainnet launch, Sony revealed two new projects in the crypto ecosystem: a fan marketing platform and an S.Blox exchange.
Fan Marketing Platform by SNFT Inc.
The platform enables brands, creators, and enterprises to use NFTs for fan engagement and marketing, simplifying NFT issuance and data analysis. The tool offers an integrated web-based wallet with social login to encourage seamless participation in Web3 activities. Sony plans to pilot the platform with its entertainment subsidiaries in February 2025.
S.BLOX Exchange Services
S.BLOX Inc. launched a revamped crypto asset exchange platform, offering BTC rewards for new accounts and trades. The exchange service, available exclusively in Japan, aims to foster innovation within the Soneium ecosystem. An NFT distribution campaign is planned for February 2025.
