Vice President Kamala Harris is set to endorse policies that promote the growth of the cryptocurrency industry, as per a report by Bloomberg published on Wednesday.
During a roundtable event hosted by Bloomberg at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, senior campaign advisor Brian Nelson expressed Harris’s intentions to engage with the cryptocurrency community.
Nelson stated, “She’s going to support policies that ensure that emerging technologies and that sort of industry can continue to grow. Obviously, they’ve expressed that one of the things that they need are stable rules, rules of the road.”
This marks the most direct acknowledgment of cryptocurrency by the Harris campaign yet, as the industry and its regulation have gained significant attention ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November.
Prominent crypto analyst Adam Cochrane commented, “This is the first official statement from the Harris campaign about crypto in any capacity, and it is a positive one. Let’s acknowledge that’s a huge step.”
U.S. Rep. Wiley Nickel (D-NC) added, “I’ve been working hard to push for a reset on crypto, and am thrilled about this important policy statement.”
Before the Bloomberg report, there was little information about Harris’s potential approach to crypto regulation. Critics have associated her with the policies of President Joe Biden, including actions by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and chair Gary Gensler.
On the other hand, the Republican Party and former president Donald Trump have shown strong support for crypto, criticizing Gensler and his stance.
Recent developments indicate increased engagement from the Democratic side. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Senate majority leader, participated in a Crypto4Harris event, pledging to advance cryptocurrency legislation before the year ends.
Mark Cuban, billionaire and crypto advocate, revealed that he was contacted by the Harris campaign regarding crypto, which he viewed as a positive sign, in an interview with Decrypt.
Additionally, Jamie R. Harrison, head of the Democratic National Committee, met with executives from Bitcoin mining company Mining Digital earlier this month.
