US SEC Seeks External Perspectives on Crypto Regulations: Peirce

Us Sec Is Looking For Outside Pov For Crypto Rules Peirce

During the Bitcoin 2025 Conference in Las Vegas, SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce shared her insights on crypto regulation in an engaging fireside chat with Fold’s General Counsel, Hailey Lennon.

Lennon initiated the discussion by inquiring about the current enforcement priorities in the digital asset sector. Peirce responded, “Some may interpret our lack of movement on many cases as inaction—but there’s a lot to consider.”

Peirce emphasized that the SEC is not neglecting the digital asset sector and is actively seeking fresh perspectives. “We’re bringing in outside viewpoints,” she remarked. “That’s truly the way to establish sound regulations.”

Part of the dialogue addressed the confusion prevalent among those in the crypto landscape regarding existing regulations. Peirce was candid about this issue: “One concern I’ve heard is that in an environment of regulatory ambiguity, it’s much tougher to identify bad actors—and it grants them more leeway to operate.”

She noted that this uncertain environment doesn’t just allow bad actors to flourish; it also drives good actors away. “It pushes legitimate participants out of the U.S. or even out of the industry altogether,” Peirce remarked.

“We need to build a supportive environment for good actors and a detrimental one for bad actors,” she added, drawing enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Peirce also touched on her recent tweet regarding disclosure requirements for crypto projects that might be classified as securities, although she did not delve into further details during the discussion.

When asked about the frenzy surrounding memecoins and similar tokens, she issued a humorous warning: “If you expect to buy a memecoin and become a billionaire—buyer beware. Be responsible. If you choose to speculate, go ahead, but if it goes awry, don’t come complaining to the government.”

Peirce urged attendees to voice their concerns on crucial issues like financial freedom and government overreach. “The government serves the people,” she stated. “Your inputs are vital for helping us navigate these matters.”

She affirmed that Americans value the “freedom to innovate” and that community involvement is essential in shaping more effective regulations.

Peirce also highlighted Bitcoin’s significance in mainstream finance, stating, “We must consider how it interacts with our regulatory system,” adding that preserving individuals’ ability to transfer value on their own terms is essential.

In closing her session, she left the audience with an empowering message: “You don’t need to wait for the government. Demand transparency. Learn from setbacks. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and strive to improve next time.”
