Founder Of Biggest Cryptocurrency Exchange, Binance, Sentenced To Prison

Changpeng Zhao, commonly referred to as “CZ,” and the mastermind behind Binance — the world’s largest cryptocurrency trading platform — has been handed a four-month jail term as of Tuesday. His conviction is the result of acknowledging violations of United States anti-money laundering regulations. The court proceedings took place in Seattle, where he received a much lighter sentence than the prosecution’s initial recommendation of three years.

Once a renowned persona in the digital currency sphere, Zhao stands as the second prominent figure in the crypto industry to be incarcerated. His term is notably lenient when juxtaposed with that of Sam Bankman-Fried, a fellow crypto mogul, who was sentenced to a quarter-century behind bars for his part in an $8 billion scandal.

The presiding judge rebuked Zhao for his prioritization of business expansion over compliance with US laws. Zhao remained impassive as his sentencing was declared. He appeared in court dressed in a dark navy suit, flanked by his mother and other relatives. His defense team had previously held out hope for a sentence of probation instead.

In contrast, U.S. Attorney Tessa Gorman touted the verdict as a milestone victory. Nevertheless, detractors like Dennis Kelleher from Better Markets contended that the modest punishment conveyed a troubling notion that “crime pays”, given Zhao’s continued access to his considerable financial resources.
