Decentraland Uses Ai To Add Life To Its Metaverse

Metaverse virtual worlds can sometimes feel empty, but Decentraland has found a solution to inject more life into its Ethereum-based world: artificial intelligence (AI). Decentraland has partnered with AI startup Inworld to introduce AI-powered non-player characters (NPCs) into the game. These NPCs function as avatars with their own personalities and can interact with players.

Three NPCs have already been introduced at Decentraland’s Genesis Plaza. Simone the Robot provides information and discussion about the metaverse, while Doge is a lighthearted character inspired by memes. Aisha, a 23-year-old gaming streamer and former skater, comes with her own backstory and opinions.

Inworld allows creators to design their own NPCs and customize their dialogues, voices, personalities, and more. The AI characters can understand different languages, making the world more inclusive for non-English speakers.

The use of AI in Decentraland enhances the immersive experience for players. NPCs can provide information about exhibitions in art galleries, engage in discussions, and showcase various features in player-created scenes. The AI tools are also being used internally by the Decentraland Foundation to shape the future development of the metaverse game world.

Decentraland is exploring the potential of AI in generating content, including 3D models. OpenAI’s Shape-E and NVIDIA’s GET3D are being considered as tools to make content creation easier, although the technology is still being developed.

While AI presents opportunities in streamlining and simplifying the creation process, concerns have been raised about the potential for plagiarism and the loss of originality. However, Yemel Jardi, Executive Director of the Decentraland Foundation, believes that AI empowers creators and sees it as a way to make the metaverse more accessible.

In partnership with Hanson Robotics, Decentraland has also launched SophiaVerse, a gamified world that allows players to learn about AI research and development. Later this year, Decentraland will host the AI World Fair, bringing together AI experts and brands to showcase new AI features within the game world.

Overall, Decentraland’s use of AI NPCs and exploration of AI tools demonstrates its commitment to enhancing the metaverse experience and making it more accessible to creators and players alike.
