Nokia, TPG Telecom, and MediaTek have collaborated to provide a glimpse into the future of the Metaverse through a groundbreaking live 360-degree video broadcast. This innovative experience is made possible by Nokia’s advanced 5G Uplink Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology, TPG Telecom’s commercial 5G network, and MediaTek’s 5G mobile chipset technology. The impressive demonstration took place at Nokia’s 5G Futures Lab in Sydney, Australia.

Nokia’s CA technology combines multiple sub-6 GHz frequency bands, resulting in optimized 5G uplink speeds that enable real-time transmission of high-quality 360-degree video. The live demo utilized solutions from Nokia’s AirScale portfolio, including baseband, massive MIMO, and Remote Radio Head products powered by the ReefShark chipset known for its energy efficiency.

MediaTek contributed its 5G mobile platform featuring the MediaTek M80 5G modem integrated into the Dimensity SoC series. The showcase used a unique combination of a 15 MHz carrier on the 700 MHz band (n28) and a 90 MHz carrier on the 3.6 GHz band (n78) through Uplink Carrier Aggregation technology. This resulted in an impressive peak uplink throughput of 159 Mbps.

The capability of 360-degree video livestreaming via 5G in Industrial Metaverse scenarios was emphasized by Leslie Shannon, Nokia’s Head of Trend and Innovation Scouting. This technology allows workers to engage in remote operations, controlling robots performing hazardous tasks in distant locations, all viewed through virtual reality headsets.

A study titled “The Metaverse at Work” revealed that 96 percent of respondents recognized the potential of the industrial metaverse to merge physical and virtual applications. The metaverse is expected to bring innovative capabilities, accelerating the deployment, adoption, and monetization of Industry 4.0 concepts for businesses.

David Yeo, General Manager of Wireless Access Networks at TPG Telecom, expressed excitement about the immersive capabilities demonstrated in the broadcast. He highlighted the potential benefits for both consumers and businesses, anticipating further collaborations with Nokia and MediaTek to unlock new content and opportunities for their customers.

Andrew Cope, Head of Oceania at Nokia, emphasized the importance of the collaboration, stating that the 360-degree video streaming showcased a critical building block of the Metaverse’s evolution. He commended Nokia’s 5G Uplink Carrier Aggregation technology for its transformative potential in driving industrial digitalization to unprecedented heights.

HC Hwang, General Manager of Wireless Communication System and Partnerships at MediaTek, celebrated the versatility of the MediaTek M80 5G modem, which played a pivotal role in enabling the 360-degree video broadcast. He highlighted the practical applications of Uplink Carrier Aggregation, expressing MediaTek’s commitment to enhancing 5G capacity and performance for a wide range of consumer devices.
